During a Mother’s day get together, I noted a display of beautiful wines,  delicious cheeses and Finger foods of grllled portabella. There was golden bubbly beer as well.  Don’t forget about the bread and pasteries! All brought to you with the help of fungus, yeasts, and molds!

Oh, those are awesome, giddy up!!

You know what is not awesome? Toe nail fungus, toenail yeasts, and toenail molds!

Oh, that isn’t awesome! Yuck!

Toenail fungus.  Even the name can make you recoil. The unsightly thickening, yellow discoloration of the toenail is brought on by the not so distant cousins of everyday organisms.  The organism opportunistically finds its way into the nail and doesn’t like to leave! Over 32 million people in the United States are afflicted with nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis.

Toenail fungus is unhealthy. It can cause pain. It’s contagious. It vacations in the skin from its home in the nail, causing characteristic burning, itching of Athlete’s foot and secondary infection by bacteria. In rare cases it can be even more serious, infected ingrown nails, painful deep blisters under the nail. Very rarely, the discoloration can be melanoma-not a joking matter, like the picture below.

And, let’s face it, onychomycosis is ugly.  It’s getting warm out, do you want to wear sandals if your nails are unsightly?  Keeping them trapped in a shoe? If you soak the toes in vinegar, you get fungal nails that smell like vinegar. Apply vaporub? You guessed it, menthol scented, thick, yellow nails. I’ve even heard of yellow mustard application. Really?
