From all of us at Emerald Coast Podiatry, we want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May you enjoy this peaceful holiday with family and friends! We look forward to seeing you (and your feet!) in the new year!
Bunions can be one big pain in the toe, literally. A bunion, also called a hallux vagus, is a small bony bump that forms on the joint of your big toe where it attaches to the foot. The big toe often is pushed outward which causes the bunion to form. This pushing outward can also happen on your little toe as well and is called a bunionette. Your feet support the weight of your body, so over time this cause painful symptoms to the foot. What are some symptoms you may see if you have a bunion?
-Inflammation (swelling) at the joint of the toe
-Difficulty moving the affected toe
-Thickened skin at the base of the big toe
And hopefully you know there is treatment available! Some of the treatments we use for bunions include: Shoe changes, orthotics, or shoe inserts, Padding the foot to achieve normal foot position, Surgery involves immediate weight baring post-surgery with minimal down time, and back into a regular shoe within 3-6 weeks. Each case is different so the first step is contacting your podiatrist to have your foot assessed. From there, an individualized treatment plan is created between you and your doctor. Having pain free feet is is an appointment away!
