What to Expect with Bunion Correction Surgery

Bunion correctional surgery after the procedure.

Understanding Bunion Correction Surgery

Bunions, also known as hallux valgus, occur when the big toe gradually shifts toward the second toe, causing a painful bump at the base joint. When conservative treatments such as shoe modifications, padding, orthotics, or anti-inflammatory medications no longer provide relief, bunion correction surgery may be recommended. At Emerald Coast Podiatry in Crestview and Fort Walton Beach, FL, Dr. Cosimo Ricciardi and Dr. Neil Patel perform bunion surgery with a focus on long-term pain relief and improved foot function.

How Surgery Helps

The primary goal of bunion corrective surgery is to relieve pain and restore the big toe joint alignment. The surgery may involve the removal of excess bone, realignment of tendons and ligaments, or cutting and repositioning the bone (osteotomy), depending on the severity of the bunion. In some cases, it may be necessary to fuse the joint for long-term stability. Each surgical approach is customized based on the patient's condition, activity level, and lifestyle requirements.

Recovery After Surgery

Patients usually go home the day of surgery in protective bandaging or a surgical shoe. Early recovery may involve restricted weight-bearing on the foot, with crutches or a walker used as necessary. Swelling and some discomfort are to be expected but will improve over the next several weeks. Most patients are back into their normal shoes within six to eight weeks, although it may take several months for the foot to completely heal. Drs. Ricciardi and Patel closely monitor progress with follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and a safe resumption of work, exercise, and daily activities.

When to Consider Bunion Surgery

Surgery is generally recommended when bunions cause persistent pain, limit daily activity, or make it painful to wear shoes. If the deformity continues to worsen despite conservative treatment, surgery can provide long-term relief and prevent further complications. A podiatry consultation will determine the best timing and procedure for your individual case.
