In
1985 Dr. Siwicki began using a carbon dioxide surgical laser
in his office under a local anesthetic and today it is a
common method of treatment for many foot problems.
A laser is a device that generates an
intense beam of light that is man-made, similar to a
magnifying glass using sun rays to focus on a object. A
surgical laser in a precise beam of light that can cut or
vaporize tissue so that the surrounding tissue is hardly
affected. The laser seals blood vessels as it cuts with
less bleeding and post-operative pain resulting in a decreased
post-operative recovery period.
Today, the laser is used in the surgical
treatment of an ingrown toenail, fungus toenail, thick and
deformed toenail, plantar wards, cysts or fibroma, skin ulcer,
scars, and plugged sweat gland disorders.
Although technology is exciting, bone
problems such as bunions, hammertoes, or heel spurs cannot be
treated with a laser.
